  1. The fluid found in the lymphatic system of
  2. vertebrates, which carries nutrients, oxygen,
  3. and white blood cells to the tissues, and
  4. waste matter away from them. It exudes from
  5. capillaries into the tissue spaces between
  6. the cells and is made up of blood plasma,
  7. plus white cells. Lymph is drained from the
  8. tissues by lymph capillaries, which empty
  9. into larger lymph vessels (lymphatics). These
  10. lead to lymph nodes (small, round bodies
  11. chiefly situated in the neck, armpit, groin,
  12. thorax, and abdomen), which process the
  13. lymphocytes produced by the bone marrow, and
  14. filter out harmful substances and bacteria.
  15. From the lymph nodes, vessels carry the lymph
  16. to the thoracic duct and the right lymphatic
  17. duct, which lead into the large veins in the
  18. neck. Some vertebrates, such as amphibians,
  19. have a lymph heart, which pumps lymph through
  20. the lymph vessels.
